Steve Job's speech at Stamford from a singaporean's eyes.

By Cho Shuhui
Imagined if you were really there, a Singaporean right at the time when Steve Jobs gave his renowned speech at the Stamford what could be the possible thoughts that comes out it? What he left behind was more than his products, his speech at Stamford still resonates in many of us.

Here's an examples of Singaporean based reactions to Steve Job’s speech:

"I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? "
-Steve Jobs
Singaporean: If you are in Singapore, I doubt your parents would actually allow that…

Modern teenagers of the 21st century ( teenagers aged 13-19) are at this cross road, we would come to a point when all that studying seemed meaningless in our search for what we really wanted to do or even determining our future. Even though Steve jobs dropped out of school at the age 17, in a Singaporean context, dropping out of school at the age of 17 will only make it even harder to get back into the education system or let alone land yourself in a decent paying job without proper education qualifications.

As much as many of us want, we can’t be like Steve jobs and drop out school just because we did not like the modules that are taking. Instead another learning point from steve jobs speech is appreciating the random compulsory pieces of information that we have to learn everyday and make full use of it.

He did not know that typography was going to be useful in the future, who knows the subjects that we all dread so much might be the one essential skill needed to bring ourselves to greatness.

In the end, Steve Jobs demonstrated the true meaning of doing what you love. That love of his for technology and liberal arts directed him in the direction that he needed to go to become what he is now.
Who knows, in the near future, his life story will be turned into a movie.

4 Ways You Can Celebrate the Life of Steve Jobs this Christmas

By Sean Lim

It is the holiday season once again.

For those who rushed to the departmental stores weeks away from December 25 to do Christmas shopping, good for you. The stockings are stuffed, the gifts are wrapped and the menu for the big Christmas dinner has already been well prepared ahead of time.

Then there are those like me – people who put off all Christmas related activities to the eleventh hour, hoping that miraculously all the shopping and gifting would be taken care of by itself.

Sadly, we don’t live in a parallel universe. In our universe, if we want something done, we need to step out and take action. Now since we are on the topic of people who “step out and take action”, one revolutionary technological hero is the late Silicon Valley bigwig Steve Jobs.

We all know who Steve Jobs is. This holiday season, forget the boring old bells and candy canes, here’s two ways in which you can employ Mr. Jobs on your Christmas trees.

1. Do-It-Yourself Steve Jobs box figurine

Before assembly...

Upon downloading the picture, print it out as you would normally for any document. Your finished assembled product should bare resemblance to this:

The finished product!

2. Young Steve Jobs’ Time magazine cover

Young Steve with the first Apple Macintosh

2011 was the last and final time Steve Jobs appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Now you can also use the cover as a Christmas tree ornament in your very own home.

Still unconvinced on whether a Steve Jobs’ inspired Christmas tree can actually work? Take a look at this Christmas tree designed by the people at AVL Moving Systems as their tribute to Steve.

Apart from employing Steve Jobs onto your Christmas trees this year, consider these two other memorabilia to add to your collection.

3. “Here’s To The Crazy Ones” poster

In 1997, Apple ran its “Think Different” advertising campaign. The campaign centered on historical figures such as Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King and Muhammad Ali. It provoked consumers to consider switching to or buying an Apple product as opposed to a PC. The campaign itself turned out to be an enormous success, winning awards including the 1998 Emmy Award for Best Commercial and the 2000 Grand Effie Award for most effective campaign in America.

Here’s an excerpt from the copy:

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.”

Sadly, the poster is no longer for sale. The best alternative would be to download the image and print it out for framing onto your wall.

4. Steve Jobs' biography

Here’s a piece of trivia you might not have known: the biography was originally titled iSteve: The Book of Jobs. However, official biographer Walter Isaacson’s wife and daughter thought that the title was “too cutesy”; hence the book was renamed to just Steve Jobs. There was nothing “cutesy” about the sales figures though: around 383,000 copies of the book were sold on the first week alone. (Source: Gigaom)

Now that you have seen what can be hung on your Christmas trees and learnt more about Apple’s visionary, what will you personally do to celebrate the life of Steve Jobs? Leave your comments and thoughts!

It’s Apple versus Orange this Lunar New Year

By Bryan Eleison

Considering this incident that occurred in Beijing, it seems that everyone wants an Apple instead of an orange this upcoming Lunar New Year.

Why does Apple looks set to win?

Everyone knows that Apple is currently numero uno in the technology industry due to their innovative gadgets which incorporates user-personalisation such as the iPad, iPhone, iPod, not forgetting the iMac desktop and laptop line which gives users a break from the Windows operating system found on a personal computer.

All of these innovations were developed when Apple was under the leadership of co-founder Steve Jobs, a man who was hailed as a revolutionary of the Silicon Valley. Although, he is probably just as well-known for his iconic ‘uniform’ that consists of a black turtleneck, blue jeans and white trainers which he wore for all of Apple’s public events.

For more pictures on Steve’s fashion sense, click here.

Though it has been three months since the Apple co-founder’s death, the last product that he
developed, the iPhone 4S, has still been flying off the shelves worldwide since its launch on
October 14 last year. The iPhone 4S is selling well, despite initial disappointment during the
media release on October 4, a day before Jobs’ demise.

Should I add the S?

So, if you’re already using an iPhone 4, is it really worth it for you to upgrade it to a 4S with your ‘ang bao’ money? The table below will highlight the key differences in the specifications between the two models, helping you to make your decision!
For a more in-depth comparison, click here.

I suppose that the additional 3 grams and missing 100 hours of battery life in standby time is due to the 4S having a built-in personal assistant Siri, a five-element lens camera that beats the iPhone 4’s by 3-megapixels, enhanced video recording resolution and stability, as well as the groundbreaking innovation that is Bluetooth 4.0.

Funny scenarios that can happen this New Year
This Lunar New Year, while you visit your relatives armed with two mandarin oranges that you’ll exchange for an ‘ang bao’, it will not be surprising to see some at the family gatherings fiddling around with their Apple products, be it an iPad, iPod or iPhone. What’s more interesting are the funny but entirely possible situations that may happen!

The iBao
Instead of getting cash in your ‘ang bao’, your parents may give you the ‘iBao’!
The ‘iBao’ is basically just any Apple product stuffed into a red packet, so just pray hard that it will be an iPhone 4S that ranges from $948 to $1238 depending on the memory space and not an iPod Shuffle that only costs $68.

Looks like someone got lucky!
The Orange Replacement
Ran out of mandarin oranges while visiting your relatives or friends? Don’t worry, because you can just pull off the orange replacement if you have an iPad or iPhone with a data connection!

Step 1: Search ‘mandarin oranges’ on Google images using Safari.

Step 2:
Find a suitable picture of two mandarin oranges and tap on it to save it to your image library.

Step 3:
Go to your camera roll via photos, select the picture of the oranges and tap it to fill the screen.

Step 4: Present it like a boss to your relatives or friends!

We all know who will be getting lots of 'ang baos' this CNY!
