By Cho Shuhui
Imagined if you were really there, a Singaporean right at the time when Steve Jobs gave his renowned speech at the Stamford what could be the possible thoughts that comes out it? What he left behind was more than his products, his speech at Stamford still resonates in many of us.

Here's an examples of Singaporean based reactions to Steve Job’s speech:

"I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? "
-Steve Jobs
Singaporean: If you are in Singapore, I doubt your parents would actually allow that…

Modern teenagers of the 21st century ( teenagers aged 13-19) are at this cross road, we would come to a point when all that studying seemed meaningless in our search for what we really wanted to do or even determining our future. Even though Steve jobs dropped out of school at the age 17, in a Singaporean context, dropping out of school at the age of 17 will only make it even harder to get back into the education system or let alone land yourself in a decent paying job without proper education qualifications.

As much as many of us want, we can’t be like Steve jobs and drop out school just because we did not like the modules that are taking. Instead another learning point from steve jobs speech is appreciating the random compulsory pieces of information that we have to learn everyday and make full use of it.

He did not know that typography was going to be useful in the future, who knows the subjects that we all dread so much might be the one essential skill needed to bring ourselves to greatness.

In the end, Steve Jobs demonstrated the true meaning of doing what you love. That love of his for technology and liberal arts directed him in the direction that he needed to go to become what he is now.
Who knows, in the near future, his life story will be turned into a movie.

  1. It's true that it would be hard to to get a job with a decent pay if we do not have a proper qualifications. But hey, if there's a will, there's a way!
For me, I believe that as long as you have the brain for business and the right opportunity comes along, anything can happen.
